Hayward looked at the list in his notebook. It contained the sources he’d gathered so far for his project. The next page held a list of facts from the article in the Quibbler. While professor Morrow had said he needed to approve all sources before Hayward was allowed to use them, he had kind of already said working from the article was a good idea. So Hayward had taken it to mean the article had already been approved. Now, though, he needed approval for the rest of his sources. He could go to professor Morrow’s office, but he didn’t want to pull the man away from something important for something so small.
With a decisive nod, Hayward decided it would be better to write a letter. That way, the professor could reply when he had the time. Not to mention it would give the man a written record, which as a researcher he might like. Hayward certainly liked written records and lists. He pulled a fresh piece of parchment towards himself and started writing.
Dear professor Morrow,
I am writing to you for approval of my sources for my history of magic project. Miss Elwyn was very helpful and found the article really quickly. I have read it and extracted all the facts Harry Potter mentioned about the Dark Lord’s past and family connections. I have decided to start with the most obvious and trying to prove or disprove it. Harry Potter said the Dark Lord’s name is Tom Marvolo Riddle, a son of the muggle Tom Riddle and the pureblood witch Merope Gaunt. He also mentioned that the Gaunt family were parseltongues and descendants of Slytherin, making Tom Riddle the Heir of Slytherin. I want to see if the Gaunt family did indeed descend from Slytherin and if there was a Merope Gaunt in the time frame Harry Potter mentions in the article, and also if she had any children. For that purpose, I plan to use the following sources:
Our Family’s Noble Lineage by Langford Gaunt, published in 1502
Parselmouths Throughout the Ages by Egbert Hodghedge
Nature's Nobility: A Wizarding Genealogy - publication by the united wizarding press, 2010 version
The Pureblood Directory - anonymous author
I hope these sources are okay to use. If you know of any other sources that could help me trace either the Gaunt family line or the Slytherin family line, I would be happy to hear about them.
Harry Potter also mentioned that Merope’s brother Morfin Gaunt spent three years in Azkaban for assaulting a Ministry official, along with his father Marvolo Gaunt who did not serve any time for some reason. The article also mentioned Tom Riddle killed his father and grandparents and framed his uncle Morfin for it, who was send to Azkaban again and died there. Are there any sources that could confirm that? Especially the murder of the Riddle family, since that might be the only mention in wizarding records of the family, aside from the article, that is.
I decided to put these questions and the source list I have at the moment in writing, because I did not want to disturb you at an inconvenient time. Of course, should you wish a meeting to discuss this in more detail, I would be happy to meet with you.
Sincerely,
Hayward Caius Morrell
PS. I checked the library and the owlery, but did not find any of your notes. I think if there are any that are still lost, they’re most likely in one of the places on the list that I don’t have access to.
Reading through his letter one more time, Hayward was satisfied with it. It contained all the pertinent information and showed the professor he was doing this methodically. Hayward had decided to focus on the wizarding side first, trying to connect the Gaunt family to the Slytherin family and confirming the details of Merope Gaunt and her family before trying to see of Merope’s connection to Tom Riddle existed. Hayward figured that Harry Potter might have actually found the Dark Lord’s family and just twisted some facts to undermine the Dark Lord after his death. It was easier than making up a lie from scratch. It helped make things more believable. But Hayward would unravel the story and find the real parentage of the Dark Lord. Well, if the professor approved of his plan, that was.
Hayward rolled up his parchment and tied it with a leather string. He put all his things in his bookbag and made his way to the owlery, where he sent it off with Portia. Now all he needed to do was keep his fingers crossed professor Morrow approved and answered quickly, because Hayward was ready to really dig into this.
