Ben Morrow had never been happier to leave his office. In the first few weeks of his new job he had started teaching, begun an enormous project, and tried to resolve issues between several students as head of Boreas house. He was beginning to think he'd bitten off more than he could chew, taking on everything he had, but he couldn't exactly drop any of it now. He'd taken on the responsibilities. At least today he could (hopefully) put them all on hold for a while. It was Saturday afternoon and he was going to go down into the village and do something relaxing.
He made sure his desk was in some semblance of order, then stood up and walked out of the office. Fumbling in his pocket, he found his keys and locked the door, then made sure to tuck the keys into that same pocket. He checked himself over to make sure he had everything else he'd need (wand, journal, self-inking quill, money bag in case he wanted to buy something in town...) then headed out of the castle and into the village.
On any other day, he might have gone into Bright Tower Books and visited with Nita. Today, though, he didn't want to see her. She was a wonderful friend but she was the opposite of relaxing. She was all bounce and chatter, an extrovert to his introvert. He wanted a bit of peace and quiet today, and Nita wasn't good at peace and quiet. He waved at her through her front window as he passed the shop, just to be polite. She waved back. Ben continued on down the street. He eventually stopped at the shop called The Spice Trade, which looked like a sort of cafe. Maybe a cup of coffee or tea would help. He had eaten breakfast at his desk, trying to grade all the papers that had piled up over the past week. He could use something to eat or drink. He pushed open the door and walked in.
Spicy scents swirled around him as he entered the shop. There were very few people inside at the moment. A few students sat together at a table, talking quietly. At the counter, an Indian woman greeted him with a warm smile.
"Hello," she said with a hint of an accent. "Welcome to the Spice Trade. Can I get you something?"
Ben looked at the menu. There were quite a few flavors of tea and coffee available. "The black tea with orange sounds delicious," he said after some consideration. "Could I have a cup of that, please?"
"Absolutely," the woman said with another smile. "Why don't you go sit down at a table and I'll bring it to you in a moment?"
"Thank you." Ben returned her smile with a small one of his own. He sat down at a small round table near the window and watched the woman behind the counter prepare his tea.
A few minutes later, the cafe owner brought Ben a steaming mug of tea on a small tray, along with a small sugar bowl, a small pitcher of cream, and a spoon. "Let me know if you need a refill," she said. "I'll be at the counter."
"Thank you," Ben said again. The woman nodded and headed back to the counter. Ben poured a bit of cream into the tea and stirred it, then took a tentative sip. The tea was more delicious than he'd imagined, and just the right temperature. He took another sip, feeling some of his worries slip away. He would have to see if the owner sold this tea so he could have it at school if he ever wanted a cup. He wasn't much of a tea drinker, usually having a cup only when he needed a caffeine boost, but this tea might change that.
He was about to take a third sip of the delightful tea when the cafe door opened and someone familiar entered. Ben set his cup down on the table to watch the newcomer.
