((trying a new layout))
Setting: University common room, in a tower closer to the professors' wing rather than the other students
Time: evening, close to dinner time on a Saturday night, autumn (early September)
Notes: University common room can ONLY have non-uni students if they are accompanied by a uni student; dorms are separated by gender, but the common room is a place of mingling
Christy was sitting in the busy common room, trying to read a book that Professor Morrow had loaned to him, but he wasn't really getting anywhere. The buzz in the common made the room seem unusually small, and Christy was finding it hard to concentrate. He knew he'd read the section about Nicodemus Prudens' role in the founding of Boreas House at least three times. He huffed, irritated, and looked around.
There was a massive storm outside the castle walls and it threw thick, pattering raindrops against the warped glass of the one huge window. It was only nearing dinner time, but the storm had blotted out the newly risen moon, and one could imagine it was the dead of night. On a clear night one could look out the window and make out the lights from the rest of the castle, but the rain was heavy that nothing really could be seen. Only occasionally when a clap of lightning illuminated the grounds could Christy make out the trees outside. Inside, the fire was blazing, adding warmth to the chill night. Normally Christy would have loved the whole scene: raging rainstorm outside, fire blazing inside, he with a good book spread open in his lap; heaven! Not tonight, though.
The storm must have been so severe that it canceled a lot of people's Saturday night plans, both students and staff. Christy often stayed in, but he didn't think he'd ever had this much company in the common room at once! Maybe he was just feeling stodgy, or maybe he was feeling territorial (being one of the oldest students there), but he simply did not like everyone here in his relaxing space. He could handle Geordie and his roommate, Peyton, and he was long used to seeing Jilly around (he knew better than to expect the separation of Houses to split she and Geordie apart). He was even used to smart ass Jai floating around, as sharp as a razor blade. Tonight was just a night for everyone to be inside and complaining about the weather and ruined plans.
Christy sighed again, running a hand through his long, messy hair. He closed the book with a loud thump!, and muttered grumpily, "I give up."
