At the end of every year, at the Great Feast right before classes let out for the summer, each House's House Points are tallied and compared. Whichever House has the most points will win a great bonus (yet to be determined) and reward.
There are several ways to earn House Points, usually really simple and take hardly any effort at all!
1. By far the easiest way to earn Points is to create a student character and be sorted into their house.
2. Every time that character posts they earn points, so an active character will receive more points than the average lurker, lol!
3. Registering for classes earns points, as does trying out for Quidditch, applying for House Prefect (years 15 and up), and being chosen as Head Boy/Girl. Again, the more active a character, the better!
4. Signing into your classes is a MUST! Not only does this award House Points but certain teachers (the "meanies") might even DEDUCT house points if you don't! This basically amounts to your character being absent and skipping class. Accumulate enough "absences" and your character can get detention! Class sign ups renew every month, so this is something you have to keep up with. Considering class role play is optional, these sign ups are all that are required (so if you're the type who doesn't like school then this is a no-brainer ). If you are intentionally trying to make your student a "baddie" and decide you'd rather them have detention then show up to class, then so be it; it all works toward their character development. But keep in mind, like any school, even the magical ones, enough absences and detentions can lead your character to becoming suspended, or in the words of Hermione, "or worse: expelled!"
5. Role playing in a class is optional, but it does award extra points. And it also provides opportunities for your character to do something where the teacher will award, or take away, house points, like in a real class. Homework or assignments may be put up and can actually be completed for bonus House Points. Good ol' nerdy fun, ladies and gents. Completely optional, but fun for the Harry Potter nerd (as most of us are) that actually likes the experience of a magical class.
6. Teachers, Heads of Houses, and the Headmaster are the only staff who can give or take away House Points based on students' behavior. So watch your conduct in the halls! If Ms. Riminesi, the librarian, ever catches that student who keeps tearing up the books, she will notify that student's Head of House (or Headmaster), who will then eke out a punishment accordingly. Likewise for the Nurse, the Groundskeeper, and any business owners in Snowy Vale.
7. Quidditch matches will commence once the teams have enough players, and every House will earn participation points, but the match winners will take the prize, of course.
8. Returning students will be awarded half the points earned when creating a new character (in other words, 25 points). If they return as Prefect they will get FULL Prefect points, as well as FULL Quidditch points.
More ways will be added, of course, as we come up with them. If anyone else would like to suggest an idea to earn more Points, please let us know here, or in the Suggestion Box.
