Professor Ivy Hawthorne walked through the door to her classroom set up at the far end of one of the castle's ground-level corridor. The Headmistress had eventually moved the Herbology classroom from an upper level down to the closest exit near the vast greenhouses. Now all one had to do was take a short walk through the roofed arcade to get to the greenhouses, should one be avoiding glaring sun or chill rain. Now the professor looked around the filled classroom with a sensation of pride, if not a bit of apprehension.
She flicked her wand at the old-fashioned chalkboard and the words "Professor Hawthorne, Herbology" appeared. She turned back to her students, all smiles.
"Welcome to Herbology class," she said, in her crisp English accent. “I’m sure you’re all expecting the average how-to class on how to take care of a plant, from planting the seed all the way to cultivating the leaf, and drying the harvest for magical and medicinal purposes. Well, you will be. However, in my class you will learn so much more than that. You will learn the uses and properties of each herb and plant, and not only will you get hands-on experience with growing one in the Greenhouse (which will count as part of your final grade, by the way), but we will also go into the woods surrounding the school and learn to identify the plants in their natural habitat.”
She walked around the front of the class, barely able to contain the excitement that only she seemed to feel. “For this class, you will need the late and great wizard Scott Cunningham’s book ‘Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs,’ to use as a guidebook. There are illustrations in the book, but I will be requiring that you also keep a notebook with you at all times for my class, so that you may record your progress and findings. The Headmistress has also granted us permission to use one of the school’s magical cameras for the year, to record accurate pictures of our plants and the growth stages of each. If any of you have need of such, I have several pairs of gardening gloves for you to borrow, and our Closet of Requirement will provide us with trowels, rakes, clippers, spades, and pots. I only have a few smocks, so I have added that to the list of class requirements. If you have not yet purchased one, I suggest you do so at the robe shop in Snowy Vale.”
“And, for my older, more advanced students, you will be given the opportunity to work closely with me, outside of class hours, to learn the darker, more secretive properties and purposes to plants, both common and rare. This is knowledge that essential for future careers such as Aurors, and certain positions in the Ministry of Magic. Naturally, this is also quite necessary for healing careers as well. If any of you older students may be interested in this, please come up to me after class.”
