Ally Jacobs was just a bit overwhelmed. She was fairly certain that her eyes had become permanently wider from opening up to look at everything. She still couldn't believe she was really here--at a school for magic! A school that was a castle, no less. If she'd opened her wardrobe and found a magical kingdom inside, she could not have been more excited.
She stood in the middle of the Polera common room, trying to take in her surroundings. There were armchairs and couches, tables and even some bookshelves, all in shades of purple. In the back of the room were staircases. Ally wondered where they went--up to where she would sleep, maybe?--but she was too excited to meet people to go exploring up there right now.
There were other students in the common room, most of them older than Ally. They were gathered in twos and threes, talking and laughing. Ally heard a lot of "Oh my gosh, I'm so glad to see you!" and "So, what did you do over the summer?" She looked for other first years to talk to but didn't see any of them. Other kids her age had been sorted, hadn't they? There'd been a bunch of first years...Where were they? She suddenly felt very small and very alone.
Jonah had said hello to most of his friends already and now he was looking around for other people to talk to. He noticed a small red-haired girl--a first year, probably, standing all by herself. She looked lost. All the other first years had probably gone up to bed already. It was pretty late. Jonah couldn't stand to see someone on their own, especially a little kid like that. He walked over and gave the girl his usual broad smile.
"Hey there, welcome to Polera! I'm Jonah Robin." He held out his hand.
Ally looked up at the big boy in front of her. He had an open, friendly face and a nice smile. She shook his hand. "I'm Ally Jacobs," she said.
"Nice to meet you, Ally. What are you doing all by yourself?"
"I don't know anybody yet," Ally said. "I sat with some kids on the train but we weren't all sorted into the same house and I don't see any of them here."
"Well now you know me," Jonah said, "and I can introduce you to some other people if you want. I think all the kids your age are up in bed now, though. Do you want me to take you up to your dorm room instead?"
Ally shook her head. "I want to meet people," she said. "I'm way too excited to sleep right now! Do you know everybody in Polera?"
"I know a lot of people," Jonah said with a laugh. "I'm a seventh year, so I've had time to get to know them. Come on, let me introduce you to some of my other friends."
Ally smiled up at him. She liked this big boy already. He was so nice! "Okay," she chirped. "Let's go!"
Jonah smiled back at her, then looked around for someone to introduce her to first.
