Hazel Franklin
-BASICS-Full Name: Hazel Adaline Franklin
Nicknames: none (at least the moment)

Alignment: Neutral
Blood Status: pureblood
Nationality: Canadian
Sexuality: straight
Taken status: Single and currently not looking
-APPEARANCE-
Face Claim: Adelaide Kane
Hair Colour: dark brown, almost black
Eye Colour: chocolate brown
Distinguishing Features: Hazel keeps her hair shoulder length, long enough to pull back into a loose ponytail, which is pretty much all she does with it. Strands tend to escape from that ponytail, so Hazel is forever tucking them behind her ear. She has her ears pierced but only wears small, simple earrings, usually silver studs.
-ACADEMIC/PROFESSIONAL HISTORY-
School Year: 2nd year (sophomore) at University; Hazel previously attended Aurora Borealis Academy and was in Boreas house.
Wand: elm and unicorn hair, 9 and ¾ inches, rather springy
Pets: none
Other Items: Hazel owns two magical cameras, one small one that fits easily in her pocket and one larger one that she keeps in a special bag.
-PERSONALITY-
Likes: potions, photography, being on her own, finding out new things, being right, lists, flowers
Dislikes: loud people, Quidditch, being distracted, disappointing others, being wrong, missing things (especially when it comes to learning), not knowing what to do in a situation
Strengths: Potions, photography, logical thinking, a lot of book smarts
Weaknesses: social skills (or lack thereof), tendency to withdraw when she feels she's out of her depth
Habits: pushing her hair behind her ear, tapping her toe while waiting
Overall Personality: Hazel is a very clever young lady, but she's never applied some of what she knows to real life situations. She's very socially awkward and shy, preferring to hide behind her books or her camera. She's a dedicated people watcher and sometimes she wonders what it would be like to be one of the people she's watching, instead of just an observer. In an academic setting, Hazel can be quite talkative (if she knows what she's talking about) and she likes to be the first to give an answer. She's not a big fan of group projects, preferring to work on her own so that she knows the work is top quality.
Hazel wants to do something with healing and potions when she graduates. At the moment she intends to be a researcher at Bonham Infirmerie, working on developing new healing potions. Most of her life is currently focused around this goal. She also has a passion for photography that she doesn't quite know what to do with. It's her hobby and she loves it, but she's never considered making a career of it before.
Although she can come off as cold or even unkind, Hazel's heart is always in the right place. She has trouble figuring out what to do around other people, but when she makes a mistake, she realizes it and she'll try her best to make things right.
-HISTORY-
Hometown: Summerside, Prince Edward Island
Family: Hazel's father, Theodore, works for the Department of Magical Cooperation. Her mother, Clarissa, is a Healer. Hazel has one older sister, Olive, but the family doesn't talk about her.
Overall History:
Hazel's family has always had high expectations for her. Her parents both attended Aurora Borealis and were top of their classes both in the lower school and the University. Her father went on to work for the Department of Magical Cooperation. Her mother became a Healer at a local hospital. They both encouraged Hazel and her sister to do her very best at everything. Hazel decided to follow in her mother's footsteps at a young age, although she doesn't want to work with patients so much as she wants to work on creating potions to cure various ailments.
The family associates exclusively with other pureblood families. Although they never expressed outright hatred of Muggles and Muggleborns, there was always the sense that "those people" were beneath purebloods such as the Franklins. They couldn't stop the girls associating with Muggleborns at school, but made it very clear that contact with Muggles was not to be had. Hazel has only recently come to realize exactly how much her parents' views have affected her own views and is trying to change her attitude.
Hazel's sister Olive was never like Hazel and their parents. She was as carefree and wild as Hazel was focused and driven. She was a year ahead of Olive at Auroral, but spent most of her time having fun. In the summer before her sixth year, Olive started dating a Muggle from the Franklins' home town. When Mr. and Mrs. Franklin found out, they were furious. They forbade Olive to see the boy any more.
Unwilling to give up her love, Olive eloped with her beloved three years ago. Her name hasn't been spoken in the Franklin household since. Their parents treated it as if Olive had died, and instilled in Hazel the fact that if she ever acted like her sister had and disgraced the family, she would be treated the same way.
{OPTIONAL}
Mirror of Erised (greatest desire): to be successful and to make her parents proud
Boggart (worst fear): her parents disowning her
Dementor (worst memory): Hazel's worst memory is the night that she found her older sister sneaking out of the house to elope with her Muggle boyfriend. When Hazel caught her, Olive urged Hazel to come with her and leave their strict parents behind. Hazel refused, too frightened to even think of defying her parents in that way. Olive left and Hazel hasn't seen her since. She misses her every day.
Patronus: tundra swan; Hazel uses the memory of graduating from Aurora.

Somewhere in the house a string quartet was playing a slow waltz. Snippets of conversation wound through the music, occasionally followed by a nasal laugh. “I’ll just go have a look for her, shall I?” a loud male voice said. “I’m sure she’s just stepped out to the powder room and gotten lost. I’ll soon find her. Haw haw haw!”
In a dim corner, Hazel Franklin drew her knees farther up to her chest and tried even harder to disappear behind the large potted plant. She bent her head lower over the book in her hands. If only her hair was down so it could hide her face. Instead it was twisted up on her head, held in place with magic and decorative silver pins, exposing her. She forced herself to focus on the words in the book. Combine the powdered unicorn horn with—
“There you are, Miss Franklin!” The rabbity face of Flavius Gordon poked through the branches of the potted plant, stopping inches from Hazel’s face. “Knew I’d find you! Why are you hiding behind this plant when you ought to be back in the ballroom with everyone else?” He laughed that loud nasal laugh. Hazel grimaced.
“I got lost,” she said flatly. “I was looking for—”
“For the powder room. That’s just what I thought,” Flavius said, laughing again. “I told your mother that must be where you ran off to. I’ll just walk you back to the ballroom now. You owe me a dance anyways, haw haw haw! I’ve been waiting all year! Come on!” He grabbed for her hand.
“No!” Hazel said, standing up and pulling away from him, though there wasn’t much room in the corner. “I…I didn’t find the powder room yet. I still need to make a visit.”
“Then I’ll walk you there,” Flavius said amiably. “Don’t want you getting lost again, haw haw!”
“That’s really not necessary, Mr. Gordon.”
“Nonsense! It’s my duty as a host. Can’t have my guests getting lost. Mother and Father would skin me alive if they knew I left you to wander the halls. It’s not far. Come on!”
He grabbed for her hand again and this time he caught it. His palm was sticky with sweat. Hazel let her hand hang limply in his. It was no use resisting him any longer. He was just going to stick around until she came with him. If he took her to the ladies’ room, though, she could hide out in there for a bit. He wouldn’t dare come in after her. She let Flavius lead her up the hallway to a door with “Powder Room” painted on it in gold letters.
“Here we are,” he announced, looking as if he’d just performed a great service. “Do what you need to and then I’ll take you back to the ballroom. You still owe me that dance, you know. Haw haw!”
Hazel nodded and hurried through the door. She pulled out her wand and tapped the knob. “Colloportus,” she whispered. That wouldn’t hold anyone for long, but she would get into trouble for locking it with a stronger spell. At least this way no one could barge in on her unannounced. She looked around the powder room, considering the best place to hide. There was a pale blue couch on one wall, but it was very close to the door. The toilet seemed to be hidden behind a curtain. That would have to do. She pushed the curtain aside and sat down on the closed lid of the toilet, then waved her wand to close the curtain again.
Suitably confined, she opened her book again. Eventually, she knew, she would get caught and she'd have to go back to the ballroom to dance with Flavius and the other pureblooded young men her parents would thrust at her. For the moment, though, she was safe. She buried her face in her book and lost herself in the words.
